Welcome to Thessaloniki!
Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by Cassander, who named it after his wife and Alexander’s the Great sister. It was chosen as the co-reigning city of the Byzantine Empire alongside Constantinople. Thessaloniki is truly unique in the sense that it intricately combines its thousand-years-old-multicultural heritage and the architectural marvels with the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Sephardic Jew history. The cutting-edge art performances and cinematic avant-garde, recently launched cultural sites and creative projects, Arts and Entertainment hubs, numerous monuments, fifteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the 5km waterfront make Thessaloniki a ”must-see destination”.
For more information about the city, visit the official website of Thessaloniki here.
Below you may find practical information on how to arrive to Thessaloniki.
Travel
You can reach Thessaloniki by air, train, road or sea. The Macedonia International Airport is not far from the city centre and the international train station offers train connections to a number of cities in Greece.
By plane
There are several options how to reach the city centre from the Macedonia International Airport.
By Taxi
You will notice a line of taxis as soon as you exit the arrivals terminal. Taxis in Thessaloniki are blue and the fare from the airport to the city centre is approximately 20 € from 5:00 am to 00:00 pm, while from 00:00 pm to 5:00 am the price increases by 10 €.
By bus
The Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH) operates a daytime bus (01X) and a nighttime bus (01N) which connect the airport with the City Center, Railway Station and Macedonia Intercity Bus Station (KTEL). The journey to the city center takes about 40 – 50 minutes. Single fare is 2€ and tickets can be purchased from vending machines inside the bus. On-board vending machines accept exact change only. Timetable of the bus line to the city centre is available on the OASTH website.
By train
The Railway Station is centrally located (28, Monastiriou street) and is well connected to the rest of the city. If you are travelling from Athens, we recommend to take the IC trains with a journey time of 5:30 h. Timetables of train connections are available on the website of the National Railway Company.
Public transport
There is a dense network of bus lines connecting most parts of the city and suburbs and bus is the only option for public transportation in Thessaloniki. All information concerning timetables, real time departures as well as route information is available on the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization’s website. You can also download the mobile phone app for iOS and Android here.
Public transport fees
You can purchase public transportation tickets at the OASTH’s ticket booths, at the partner shops or inside the buses using vending machines. A regular fare single trip ticket costs 1,00 € (valid for one trip only), a two-trip 70-minute ticket costs 1,20 € and is valid for two bus trips to/from any direction and any bus route within 70 minutes of validation. More information about the bus fares is available on the website.
